born & raised in this town, i've never locked my doors... in fact, i now basically leave a key in my ignition and go about my merry way.
sadly, I may never feel so free ever again. after today i may very well find myself neurotically locking everything, removing the stereo face, and surely covering any other important items in view... *hangs head in sadness*
jonathan's car was broken into this afternoon/early-evening.
there's more where that came from...while we were at the movies... some punk/s broke through his rear-passenger-side window & proceeded to remove his stereo, amp, and finally the sub-woofer from the trunk! *shaking head* praise God his camera and tools were left behind despite being right at site/next to the sub-woofer. whoever it was, they knew what they were after and went right to it. He was parked as close to the actual theater as one could possibly be, in that well trafficked parking lot. despite the fact that we all [locals] tout "it's Hood River!" he'd locked his doors... alas the face was still on the stereo (popped out, but still in place; weird, freaky, random issue with the stereo turning on even without the key in the ignition...) & the amp was visible down my the ¿gear-shift?, plus he drives a Honda.
We were having such a pleasant afternoon as it was, for the most part.
I'd woken up to a call from andy about the movie we'd discussed watching the night before. Figuring we'd hit the earliest showing {around 1pm,) I'd actually fallen asleep waiting for the call... only to wake up nearly 2 hours later. Sadly, I'd acquired a massive headache before napping and it was only worse when I awoke. The heat had enveloped my house, creating a heavy environment, surely factoring into my deep sleep. I got up as quickly as I could, closed all my windows, and turned the ac on as I flew out the door in my swimsuit and flowy dress.
strangely enough, despite my stuper, I was able to note that the movie wasn't playing at the time andy had thought. So a couple phone calls and communications later, we all ended up at Lampoei's [sp?] where I got myself an iced coffee to ease the heat and meet the caffeine need. Then we decided to make time down by the river, until the movie.
Once again, it's so awesome to hang out with 'real men' who honestly have my back and watch out for me in millions of simple ways that people oft take for granted! we walked across the train tracks/bridge... amancay nearly pees her pants as she can see the rushing water and rigged rocks far below them between all the gaps that are especially wide enough for her tiny feet to slip through... andy flinches not as she grabs his arm for the duration of the cross. the path down to the shore, from the tracks is steep, dirty, and rugged... amancay is quite unsure she can handle the trek... jonathan is walking up and down the tracks trying to find a better trail, andy goes up and down the path feeling it out, boys offer to turn back and go to my usual spot, and finally decide to help me along (one before and one behind) down the path with steady steps and string hands. the walk to 'the sandy beach' is slightly longer than anticipated and completely a rock to rock hop... amancay is u:ber concentrated as she steps along one stone at a time... andy carries all her accessories, enabling further focus.
jj & I dove right in and actually swam across the small, yet swift, spot of the Hood that we hit. It was cold enough to rid me of any and all heat issues for the greater part of the rest of day. Andy waded in, slowly, to just past his waist. Jonathan, still recovering from a pretty intensive week of sickly-ness, wisely stayed ashore. it was actually clod enough to take most of my breath away and make the swimming rather intensive... especially as one had to also fight the current, or be carried away!
Back at the theater we all go our tickets, eagerly got popcorn, and settled in for a fun flick as four friends. We laughed, munched, sipped, and whispered various things...
As we walked away, we hung out by cars along the sidewalk and mostly made plans to re-gather soon and play a game in the nice weather with refreshments and munchies & crunchies! Andy talked me out of my car for the 1/2 hour we were splitting, and we were all on our way. Andy offered jj a ride [in my car] back to the house, and they were off. I hopped into his van, adjusted the seat, turned on the cd player, pressed the magic button, and was hearing a confusing buzzing. I finally realized it was my phone, ringing, in silent mode.
Jonathan was calling me. I picked up, immediately explaining my confusion with the intermittent buzzing. Somehow he listened to me, and then simply said/asked, "can you come over here!?"
confused in the moment, I asked, "ok, where are you!?"
"across the street" *click* he had actually hung up [on me]
it was then that I knew something was up. I looked over, and sure enough, there he was. Walking back towards his car his demeanor alone had me pretty confused and almost scared at the possibility.
Honestly the possibilities that ran through my head ranged from 'locked keys in car' to 'someone pranked/vandalized', and finally 'i've been hit and run'... never was I expecting to pull around the car and see the puddle of shattered glass. In fact, it was all so foreign I think I was there and standing outside the vehicle for a while before finding out, or even asking, that the stereo and such were gone. I immediately called 911, and told jonathan not to touch anything.
Neil showed up, started gathering information for a report, and sadly had to explain how implausible [finger]printing such a crime really is. Later another officer joined the scene, sharing that he'd been on another call. Just across the way, in the adjacent parking lot (actually kitty-corner), a driver's window had been knocked out... people reported someone[s] seen around the car, perhaps they got spooked before they could take anything, as nothing was missing. However, one can hope that this is the same series of events and said description will result in something.
Knowing just how personal such a crime is, despite never actually being present for it, I can only imagine the thoughts and feelings flooding through his brain. You have to factor in that your space and privacy was violated, your stuff now taken, and any sort of sense of security you might have had is gone. Jonathan's car is muy importante to him... as is his stereo & music. So it's especially hash, as these are thing he's rather proud of (with good reason, might i add; they're pretty sweet!)
What sticks out most in my mind is how Jonathan handled it all. He let loose not a flicker of anger, that I was able to see. After the air cleared, police left, and we'd cleared out at least enough glass for him to be able to drive away without it flying all over the inside of the car, he turned to me and simply said, "come over... and keep me company?"
I nodded, "yeah... I just have to find Andy, let him know what's going on, and get my car back" and walked over to give him a hug.
Back at the house he was vacuuming up the glass, Tor helped him actually grab large bits with gloves, and we duct-taped a piece of plastic over the empty spot.
There's so much more... tiny nuances to the evening... but it's so late, and I've written for over an hour as it is... I'll have to simply revisit and/or let it be... we shall see!
...enough already!
